i thought i would start this blog on contemporary portraiture off with a self-portrait by Erica Lord. i first saw this image a few months ago and it stuck with me. it is so beautiful and dark. i would have loved to see the 40 x 32 print of this at the Museum of the North in Alaska. Lord's work includes several projects that explore Native American identity. in her own words "I want to raise questions as well as declare convictions; challenge, deconstruct, and influence a new way of thinking about contemporary Native people, our life, and our art."
